Scope and Contents

The album was compiled by Frank Woodward and includes a collection of photographs of Selwyn and the vicinity with descriptions and notes on their history. It was originally housed in a loose leaf scrapbook with descriptions of Selwyn with photographs as follows: of Pinehurst (1); the Mill Pool (2); the new library and Charles Phillips, the Librarian (3); the temporary chapel (1); demolition of the temporary library (3); fence, railings and wall in the old court (5); master’s lodge (1); chapel (3); Frederick Shipley Marsh in the garden (1); the garden - including site for White Cottage near Eton Fives Court); (4), the hall (3); the playing field (5); wartime air raid precautions (3); interior of room (1) and view from view (1); With text, index and pasted-in correspondence. Mentions other members of Selwyn including notes on College servants in Personal section. The album has now been rehoused with the loose pages in archival sleeves in an archival box. The outer cover which has two items pasted on the inside is housed separately.

Biographical / Historical

Frank Woodward (1904-1994, SE 1923) came to Selwyn as a mathematical scholar in 1923 and he graduated as a Wrangler in 1926. He was also Captain of Cricket in that year. He taught for a year at Oundle and then returned to Selwyn in 1928 as Fellow. He was also appointed Assistant Bursar with special responsibility for investments and later took charge of the air raid precautions during the war. He left Selwyn in 1944 and moved to a post in London which led to other wealthy occupations. He was closely involved with many projects in York, his native city. He founded the York Civic Trust and was associated with the movement to found a new University. He also continued to remember Selwyn and gave several generous gifts to the College. He also presented the album of photographs to the College in 1969 (as mentioned in his obituary in 1994).

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Frank Woodward presented the album of photographs to the College in 1969 (as mentioned in his obituary in 1994).
