Scope and Contents

Volume has title "Famous paintings" on spine and front board. Comprises correspondence, papers, photographs (3), and press cuttings about Selwyn College, primarily celebrations for the Jubilee (50th anniversary) in 1933 and the commemoration of Rev. George E Newsom, the Master of Selwyn, who died unexpectedly in 1934. Also many newscuttings, menus and other papers relating to the Boat Club 1932-1935. A few photographs near the rear including the Boat Club and Graduation photograph of NGP and two friends, 1935. Also includes a pastel sketch of a church. Also with some papers about Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Union Society, the Oratory of the Good Shepherd, Marlow regatta, and the Cambridge Old Bedfordian Society.

Biographical / Historical

Nathaniel Gilbert Philips was at Selwyn College between 1932-35. He was a member of the Boat Club and rowed in the winning Fairburn boat in the Autumn term of 1934 and the second May Boat in 1935 which made three bumps. He was ordained in 1937 and later became vicar of Little Houghton with Brayfield-on-the-Green, Northants from 1944 until his death in 1967 aged 54.

The volume was compiled by Nathaniel Philips and a note inside the front cover explains that the volume was gibven to the Archive by his sister, Joyce Faulkner, in September 1977.
