Biographical / Historical
20 May 1916-July 2015, British Professor, writer and prominent theologian. Attended Tonbridge School, St John's College, Cambridge, Ripon College Oxford. Elected Fellow of Trinity Hall in 1947 and Master of Selwyn in 1956. During this time he chaired the Archbishops' Commision on Church and State 1967-71 and was Regius Professor of Modern History between 1968-1982 and was Vice Chancellor in the early 1970s. He retired as Master in 1983. He had been made Knight of the British Empire in 1982 and Order of Merit in 1983. He was later awarded an Honorary Degree at Wales in 1993
