Biographical / Historical

The Society was founded in 1893 according to a note in the Calendar in 1894 and recorded as Feb 1893 in the first surviving minute book in 1897. The badge was a lyre. The object of the Society according to rules pasted into volume 2 in 1909 was "the reading and discussion of English poetry and drama". The total number of members could not exceed 12 though this appears to have increased later.
