Scope and Contents

Letters from Edmund Hobhouse mainly to Lyttelton about the foundation of the college, charter and ideas for the badge or crest to be used in the Chapel; Also some letters to Thatcher, Bishop Abraham and one to the Bursar in 1887 in which he encloses a cutting from the Morning Post which confuses the new Cavendish college with Selwyn. Also letters to AR Ford, college solicitor re his "anonymous" donation to the college (1900-1901)

Biographical / Historical

Edmund Hobhouse (17 April 1817 – 20 April 1904) was a friend and colleague of Bishop Augustus Selwyn who appointed him as bishop of Nelson, New Zealand and later assistant bishop in Lichfield. He was a member of the memorial Committee for the new Selwyn College and also the council but later resigned because of illhealth.
