Catalogue of books donated by Sir William Martin, 1881-04

 File
Reference Code: GBR/0276/SEAR/4/2/1

Scope and Contents

A small volume which has been reused as there are obvious signs of pages having been removed at one end of the volume and then the volume has been turned round and a list started from the other end. There is a note at what is now the rear of the volume saying, "Catalogue of books at No. 2 Matlock Terrace, April 1881. Then in different handwriting at the other end, "Catalogue - books of Sir William Martin sent for Library Selwyn College Cambridge". The list includes titles and authors but no dates. " It would appear that a list of William Martin's books made in 1881 after his death in the previous year was removed and a new list made before they were donated to Selwyn College by his widow, Mary Ann Martin.

Biographical / Historical

Sir William Martin (1807-1880) was the first chief justice of New Zealand and he and his wife, Mary Ann, were close friends and colleagues of Bishop George Augustus Selwyn and his wife, Sarah. After several years in New Zealand he resigned his position owing to illhealth but remained in the country assisting the Selwyns with their work at St John's College before eventually returning to England in 1874 when they joined the Selwyns in Lichfield. After Bishop Selwyn's death in 1878 they moved to Torquay where Sir Martin died soon after in 1880. His wife remained there working for the church and society until her death a few years later. She donated her husband's book collection to Selwyn College for the library.
