Herbert Brownlow Shephard fire screen guard or needlepoint, 1889
Scope and Contents
A firescreen guard or needlepoint which was reportedly stitched by Herbert Brownlow Shephard (SE 1888) while recovering from a back injury during his time at Selwyn. It is mentioned by his daughter, Yolande, in her memoir of her father, "After Eton came Selwyn College, Cambridge, where he suffered a strained back while on the rowing team and was flat in bed for several weeks. To pass the time he cross-stitched a velvet fire-screen with the college coat of arms."

Biographical / Historical
Herbert Brownlow Shephard 1870-1952 (SE 1888) and read Law at Selwyn and was a member of the college Boat Club. He was born in Eton, married and was a farmer with a family in Kent before moving to California where he had a second family.
