Scope and Contents

The following portraits, listed here alphabetically, were found in a portfolio labelled as above:
1) Blomefield: Sepia photograph, 23cm x 31cm, mounted on board, with handwritten label reading ‘Leonard Blomefield Aged 85’ [signed by L B himself?]. Photographer unknown. No date: circa 1885? Three quarter figure, seated, half profile, holding book in right hand;
2) Bowman: Printed engraving by John Webb of a portrait, 47cm x 39cm, of W Bowman (1816-1892). ‘Hon. Member’ pencilled on back. No date: circa 1870? Three quarter figure, seated, profile, holding a book and spectacles;
3) Brougham: Black and white engraving, 30cm x 23cm, printed on card, of H Brougham (1778-1868). Signed ‘Believe me truly yours H. Brougham’. Half figure, seated, full face. The card is printed as follows: ‘Claudet Daguer. London June 16 1849. Published by Mr Claudet, 18 King William St Charing Cross, and Collosseum Regents Park & Ankermann & Co Strand. On Stone by W Bosley. M & N Hanhart Imp.’;
4) Davis: Sepia photograph, 20cm x 12cm, mounted on card, by Mayall & Co Ltd, of 73 Piccadilly, London, of James W Davis. The mount is printed ‘Yorkshire Geological and Polytechnic Society’ and signed ‘Sincerely yours James W Davis’. No date: early 20thC? Head and shoulders, profile;
5) Foster: Sepia engraving, 22cm x 26cm, by Swan Electric Engraving co Ltd of a portrait by the Hon. John Collier of Sir Michael Foster (1836-1907) KCB MD FRS, Secretary of the Royal Society 1881-1903. No date: circa 1903? Head and shoulders, full face (slightly turned).
6) Geikie: Black and white photogravure, 28cm x 22cm, by Henry Dixon & Sons, London NW, of a portrait by R G Eves of Sir Archibald Geikie O.M. (1835-1924). No date: circa 1900? Half figure, seated, full face, holding spectacles in right hand. Some foxing;
7) Hicks: Black and white autogravure, 25cm x 31cm, by Autotype Co London, of a portrait of W M Hicks (1850-1934). No date: circa 1910? Three quarter figure, seated, full face, wearing academic dress;
8) Huggins: Black and white engraving, 26cm x 33cm, mounted on card, of a photograph (photographer unknown) of Sir William Huggins (1824-1910) KCB OM DCL PRS. No date: circa 1900? Mount signed ‘Yours faithfully, William Huggins’. Head and shoulders, semi profile. Some foxing;
9) Hunter: Black and white printed ‘Photogravure by Annan & Sons from a photograph by Frederick Hollyer’, 35cm x 26cm. ‘Sir Patrick Manson (1844-1922)’ is pencilled onto the mount but ‘J Young Hunter 1912’ is printed onto the image itself. Full figure, seated, full face;
10) Neville: Sepia printed engraving by ‘Emery & Walker Ph. sc.’, 23cm x 27cm, of a portrait by Charles H Shannon ARA of F H Neville (1848-1915) FRS, Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. No date: circa 1910? Half figure, seated, full face, in academic dress;
11) Thackeray: Black and white engraving, 36cm x 45cm, by William Ward, ‘engraver to his Majesty’, of a portrait of Joseph Thackeray (1784-1832) MD Physician to the Infirmary Bedford. Printed by J Jackson RA and B E Duppa. Published 1832. Three quarter figure, seated, full face (slightly turned), in academic dress.
