Scope and Contents

Record of annual dinners and some special dinners of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, noting date, time, venue, signatures of those attending, menus and seating plans. The record appears to be incomplete but the following years are recorded: 1845 (the cost of a ticket being 13/6); 1878-1932 (no dinner was held in 1912 because of the death of George Darwin, President, and dinners were suspended 1914-18), 1935, 1938, 1966 (dinner for Academician Pyotr Kapitza held at Gonville and Caius College), 1969 (150th anniversary dinner held at St Catharine’s College); and 1982 (dinner to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the granting of the Society’s Royal Charter, held at St Catharine’s College).
Additional items pasted in include: press cuttings concerning speeches given at the 1932 dinner to celebrate the charter centenary; flyers; and invitations.
Dinners were held variously at: The Eagle (1845); Christ’s College (1892, 1897, 1905, 1907, 1913); Clare College (1893); Corpus Christi College (1880); Downing College (1921); Emmanuel College (1881, 1900); Magdalene College (1885); King’s College (1923, 1935); Pembroke College (1879, 1902, 1932); Peterhouse (1884, 1890); Queens’ College (1878); St Catharine’s College (1883, 1969, 1982); St John’s College (1898, 1899, 1906, 1909, 1925, 1930); Sidney Sussex College (1896, 1919); Trinity College (1895, 1889, 1908, 1910, 1911, 1927, 1938).
