Scope and Contents

26 copper plates, chiefly measuring 30cm x 25 cm, used to produce illustrations in early publications of the Cambridge Philosophical Society. Engravers, all of London, include William Pontifex Sons & Wood, Shoe Lane; R Pontifex & Son, 23 Lisle Street, Soho & 1 Upper St Martin's Lane; G Harris, 31 Shoe Lane; G Harris & Co, Harp Alley, Shoe Lane; Large, New Street, Shoe Lane; Hughes, 8 Peterborough Court, Fleet Street; and an indecipherable name of 9 Ratcliff Row, Bath Street, City Road.
Most of the illustrations are either unidentified or the captions are too small to read but a few have paper labels, including: Mr Willis on the Mechanism of the Larynx, Vol 4 Plate 22; Mr Willis on the Vowel Sounds & on Reed Organ-Pipes, Vol 3 Plate 4; Sir J F Herschel on a Machine for resolving &c Vol. 4; Mr Jenyns’s Monograph on the British Species of Cyclas and Pisidium Vol. 4 Plate 21; Mr Morton on the Focus of a Conic Section Vol 3 Part I Plate 4; Mr Challis on Small Vibratory Motions &c Vol. 3 Plate 6.
