Principia, 1965 - 1967
Scope and Contents
Letter to the Librarian of the Cambridge Philosophical Society from Dr M A Hoskin enquiring on behalf of Prof I B Cohen (who is preparing a critical edition of Isaac Newton’s Principia) about possible sources in the Society’s archives relating to its plans in about 1904 to produce a collected edition of the works of Isaac Newton. The letter is annotated in pencil with references to relevant Council minutes, 1903-08, including ‘Newton Papers’ and ‘Newton Club’ [references to papers held at Cambridge University Library?].
The file also contains a Cambridge University Press flyer [1967] for ‘The Correspondence of Isaac Newton’, ie the publication of a complete edition of all the known letters written by and to Isaac Newton. Early volumes were edited by H W Turnbull [member of the Cambridge Philosophical Society – see CPS 3/2] and J F Scott: this leaflet publicises volumes 5-7 in preparation and contains facsimiles of two letters written by Isaac Newton, 1671 and undated.
