Scope and Contents

Meetings were held variously at the Mill Lane Lecture Rooms, the Arts School, the Department of Radiotherapeutics, and the Zoology, Chemical, Engineering and Cavendish Laboratories. From the early 1960s onwards many took place in the Arts School.
Some meetings were held jointly with other bodies, including: the Cambridge University Meteorological Society; the Physics Society; the Archimedeans; the University Veterinary School, the University Engineering Society; the University Chemical Society and the Chemical Society (London); the University Medical School; and the Society for the Application of Research.
By this date most meetings appear to consist of a single lecture or external visit or a symposium with a handful of speakers. Speakers of note include: Dr J S Mitchell, Fred Hoyle, Lawrence Bragg, Max Perutz, Sir Charles Darwin, Francis Crick, Joseph Needham, William Hawthorne, Edward Bullard, J D Bernal, F S Dainton, D W Sciama, H E Huxley, Alex Todd, N Barnes Wallis, M V Wilkes, George Thomson, Aaron Klug, Roy Calne, Brian Pippard and Alan Cottrell.
External visits for demonstrations of research work etc include: the University Farm; the University Press; Pye Ltd; ‘the new Bore Hole’; the Botanic Garden; the Hydraulic Model at the Great Ouse River Board, Coldham’s Lane; Cranfield College of Aeronautics; ICI Welwyn Garden City; the School of Veterinary Medicine; the Babraham Institute; the Cambridge Observatories; the Mullard Radio Astronomy Laboratory; the John Innes Institute; Tube Investments Research Laboratories; DSIR Water Pollution Research Laboratory Stevenage; the British Welding Research Association; the Department of Chemical Engineering; Unilever Research Laboratory near Bedford; MoD Services Electronics Research Laboratory, Baldock; Monks Wood Experimental Station, Abbots Ripton, Huntingdon.
External visits appear to tail off from the late 1960s.

p.121: minute 11 of AGM 27 October 1958 notes the possibility of the establishment of a University Science Library;
p.123, pasted in: note by the Archimedeans minutes secretary (D M Blackburn) concerning the Larmor Memorial Lecture 1958, delivered by Prof J L Synge;
p.222: note of a dinner held by the Society 20 May 1966 at Gonville and Caius College in honour of Academician P Kapitza, ‘one of its most distinguished foreign members’.
