Scope and Contents
File contains the following:
Unsigned letter [presumed to be in the hand of Adam Sedgwick] to the Privy Council / Prince William Frederick (1776-1834, Chancellor of the University of Cambridge from 1811 until his death and Patron of the Society), explaining the grounds on which the Society has resolved to petition for a charter of incorporation, namely respectability, influence, securing permanency, and the need to obtain adequate premises;
Transcript of the letter, compiled 2016;
Photocopies of samples of the handwriting of the letter and of samples of the handwriting of Adam Sedgwick from the Sedgwick archive held at the University Library, set side by side for comparison.
[NB: the opinion of three palaeographers was sought: all are agreed that the handwriting of the letter is almost certainly that of Adam Sedgwick.]
