Scope and Contents
Collected file of material by and relating to John Stevens Henslow (1796-1861, botanist and co-founder of the Cambridge Philosophical Society). Contains:
1) Facsimile edition of J S Henslow, 'On the Examination of a Hybrid Digitalis', pub. Cambridge University Botanic Garden 1981;
2) J S Henslow, 'Geological Description of Anglesey', being a reprint of Henslow's 'Geological Description of Anglesea' of 1822, with preface by T P T Williams, 2002 [this is a reprint of JSH's memoir of this title which appeared in Vol. 1 of the CPS Transactions, 1822, here reproduced as 'North Wales Local Geology Classic Reprints no. 2']. Williams notes in the preface: "The geological work reproduced in this booklet was far ahead of its time. In 1822, when many geologists were still not fully convinced of the igneous origin of granite, Henslow had already grasped the nature of thermal metamorphism and knew that cleavage and schistosity in sedimentary rocks were independent of the original bedding - - - ";
3) Cambridge University Botanic Garden 150th anniversary celebration 9-14 July 1981: booklet containing programme, list of participants and text of lectures given. Includes a few references to Henslow, eg pages 24-25, beginning JSH "is, of course, the 'hero' of this Anniversary';
4) 'Down House: The Home of Charles Darwin': English Heritage publication illustrated in colour, 1998. Includes material on Darwin's Cambridge years, Henslow's mentorship of him, the Beagle voyage etc.
