Scope and Contents

This poster has 9 frames [numbered from left to right] describing household sanitation practices:
(1) Toilets: Cover refuse receptacles and add lime or sand after each use to prevent flies from laying eggs. If eggs are already present, you can add lime or disinfectant. In dry-pit toilets, it is possible to use boiling water to kill them with heat. Keep the bathroom windows covered with screens or iron mesh.
(2) Cleaning: All residents should clean living compounds at specified times. Walkways, courtyards, kitchens, toilets, rooms, and spaces full of piled up odds and ends must be thoroughly cleaned and frequently inspected, and their cleanliness maintained.
(3) Eliminate rats: Rats can transmit plague and must be killed. It is possible to use cement or lime; mix it with hair, glass sherds or piles of broken stone to plug up rat holes. There are different methods of catching rats to exterminate them [6 pictures showing ways to catch and kill them]; the dead ones must be burned or buried.
(4) Garbage: Flies like garbage piles for laying eggs, so every household should have a covered box for garbage, or other container, and empty it once a day.
(5) Safe use of water: Wells need to have a cover, a platform and fence. Cracks in the walls of wells should be sealed with cement to avoid contamination. Public water containers should be fixed securely so they cannot be knocked over to prevent contamination. The alum filtering method should be used for public drinking water and water for cooking, using the sand filter bucket, and using bleach powder to kill bacteria. Drinking water must be boiled. (Labels describing an image depicting the filtering process: Barrels should contain 5 inches of stone. This sits on top of a layer of palm bark or bamboo or straw mat, followed by 12 inches of sand. The bottom layer is made up of palm bark or straw mat, under which is 4 inches of stone.)
(6) Killing and preventing flies: First thing in the morning carry out anti-fly activities. Kill them with fly swatters, flypaper, or 666, DDT, pyretheum (the insecticide from chuchongju 除蟲菊 [Tanacetum cinerariifolium]) or other chemicals to kill flies. Cover windows with bamboo blinds and gauze; cover food with gauze nets to prevent flies from getting to the food and spreading cholera, typhoid, dysentery and other germs.
(7) Cleaning indoors: Open windows for ventilation and allow sunlight in. Level off walls and floors, place things neatly and avoid clutter. In dark, wet places apply lime or spray carbolic acid.
(8) Eliminate sewage and accumulated water: Cleaning out sewage can prevent the assembly of mosquitoes and flies; eliminating accumulated water can avoid mosquitoes’ reproduction. Drains should be washed out often. Cover water containers and change the water regularly. Furthermore: overturn empty pots. Fill holes in trees. Turn containers upside down so water does not accumulate.
(9) Kitchens: Use boiling water to wash dishes, cooking pots, plates and bowls after using them, and use a cotton cloth to cover them or place them inside screened cupboards to keep flies away. Windows and doors should have equipment to guard against flies. Cover any jars and bowls of food to protect from rats getting at it and eating it on the sly.
