Catalogue in progress. Further records will be uploaded over the coming months.
Correspondence on the Loran-C navigation service, and particularly on the measurements of Loran-C pulses made at Herstmonceux, 1963 - 1976
Includes an account of the installation and subsequent use (up to 1972) of Loran-C measuring equipment at the RGO.
Correspondence on Radio Time Signals concerning the frequencies on which radio time signals should be based, 1958 - 1959
The important event to be settled in the correspondence between the RGO, the National Physics Laboratory and the US Naval Observatory was the meeting at the home of H.M. Smith, July 1959, at which it was decided that the emission times of UK radio time signals should be co-ordinated with those of US radio time signals. Following this initiative, the Bureau International de l'Heure subsequently assumed responsibility for ensuring the co-ordination of all international radio time signals.
Correspondence between the RGO Time Department and the Time Service of the US Naval Observatory, 1960 - 1961
The letters are mainly between H.M. Smith and W. Markowitz, and are concerned with questions and problems arising from the co-ordination of the emission times of time signals in the UK and US.
Correspondence and papers relating to the Berlin Printing Chronograph, 1950 - 1952
The Berlin Printing Chronograph was acquired by the Time Department in 1951 and returned to France in 1952 on grounds of faulty performance due to design and construction faults.
Correspondence, reports and brochures on measuring equipment for use in time and frequency comparisons made in the Time Department, 1957 - 1976
There are several papers dealing with the purchase of Caesium Beam Atomic Clocks.
Correspondence regarding equipment on loan, in the RGO, or loaned by the RGO for scientific purposes, 1959 - 1973
Catalogue in progress. Further records will be uploaded over the coming months.
Analyses of Small Transit Observations, 1950 - 1951
With information on the Hollerith computing machinery in the North American Observatory, 1950; discussions on the possible use of Hollerith computing machinery in investigating errors in the Small Transit Observations; an investigation of such errors, made by Miss C.A.J. Penny, and comments on the results by R.H. Tucker.
Correspondence and reports on telescopes that were projected for use in transit observations for the Time Department but never actually employed, 1944 - 1956
With many papers by D.S. Perfect, designer of the RGO PZT (Photographic Zenith Tube).
Radio Time Signals, 1950
Correspondence of H.M. Smith mainly dealing with enquiries regarding the time signals emitted from the Time Department, but also including references to time signals originating elsewhere.
