Scope and Contents
Bernal was appointed to the Chair of Physics in November 1937, starting part-time in January 1938 and full-time from March 1938. Birkbeck College was then in the Breams Building off Chancery Lane, London, WC2. It was bombed during the war and rebuilt on the Bloomsbury site after the war. On 1 July 1948 the Biomolecular Research Laboratory, Torrington Square, was opened. In September 1963, Bernal was appointed to the Chair of Crystallography. He retired in 1968.

Bernal was appointed to the Civil Defence Research Committee of the Ministry of Home Security, which first met on 12 May 1939. In September 1939 he started work for the Ministry of Home Security, based at Princes Risborough. From April to May 1940 he visited France. During 1940 Bernal was appointed to scientific advisor to Lord Louis Mountbatten, head of Combined Operations.
