Identified by the handwriting as being by William Govett Romaine (1815-1893), who was appointed in 1854 as deputy judge-advocate to the Army in the East. Scope and Contents Sir Richard Airey (1803-1881) served as military secretary to the commander-in-chief, Lord Hardinge 1852-1854. He began the Crimean campaign in charge of a brigade, but was made Quartermaster General on 1 September 1854 and served until November 1855, enduring accusations of inefficiency by the British press. Sir Henry Hardinge, first Viscount Hardinge of Lahore (1785-1856), was Master-General of the ordnance in 1852, and succeeded Wellington as Commander-in-Chief later that year.

Scope and Contents James Thomas Brudenell, seventh Earl of Cardigan (1797-1868) led the charge of the Light Brigade at the battle of Balaklava in 1854, and afterwards spent a good deal of time defending his conduct on that occasion, including bringing a libel action in 1863 against Lt Col.
