Work began in 1943, incorporating data between 1938 and 1942 supplied by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Ministry of Town and Country Planning. L Dudley Stamp and Christie Willatts drew land classification categories on Land utilisation survey one-inch maps: these were reduced to quarter-inch and finally ten-mile scale.
