Scope and Contents

A collection of sixty-nine poetical manuscripts bound into one volume. The documents are mainly concerned with Sancho Dvila y Osorio (d. 1689), Marqus de Astorga, de Velada y de San Roman, who became Viceroy of Valencia in 1664, and later Viceroy of Naples and Mayordomo mayor, and with his father, Antonio Dvila y Toldeo (1590-1666), Marqus de Velada, Governor and Captain-General of Milan. One of the poems is in the former's hand.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The volume was purchased from the bookseller Thomas Thorpe by Sir Thomas Phillipps, and became MS 2405 in his library. It was part of the sale of his collection at Sotheby's on 26 June 1973 where it was bought by the Library.

Cambridge University Library holds a volume of poems, MS.Add.7939, which was probably owned by Antonio Pedro Sancho Dvila y Osorio, and includes a poem about him.
