Scope and Contents

The volume begins with two long manuscript poems: 'Reminiscences of the life of Robert Maynard' (1879) and 'Whittlesford, a poem in five sections, or flights, by an old inhabitant' (1880). These are followed by a number of shorter manuscript and printed poems: 'Ninewells' (undated); 'The recitation of the Old Monarch Oak at the Whittlesford Working Men's Hall November 21st 1866'; 'In memoriam' (1857), written in honour of Mary Maynard (d. 1856); 'The Grantchester fire' (1867); 'The field of Candahar' (1880); 'The war in the Transvaal' (1881); and 'Alexandria' (1882). There are a few pictures scattered throughout the volume.
