Frederick William Rolfe ('Baron Corvo'): Letters from him to Grant Richards

Scope and Contents

The letters mostly discuss Rolfe's literary plans, and the possibility that Richards might wish to publish a volume of his reviews, his translation of the poetry of Meleager, and two novels. They are imbued with Rolfe's firm belief in the merit and significance of his work.

The circumstances under which Cambridge University Library acquired the letters, and the date of their acquisition, are unknown.

Bibliography

The Library also holds a short letter from Rolfe (signing himself 'Frederick Baron Corvo') to the University Librarian, 26 June 1902 (MS Add.2588/127), enclosing an authorial statement to be kept with the Library's copy of his Chronicles of the house of Borgia, which was subsequently removed from that volume and catalogued separately as a manuscript (MS Add.2768/12).
