Scope and Contents

Collections for a biographies of Robert Grosseteste, bishop of Lincoln; John Peckham, archbishop of Canterbury; George Montaigne, archbishop of York; Lancelot Andrewes, bishop of Winchester; John Jewel, bishop of Salisbury; and John Overall, bishop of Norwich. The latter including 'Censure of a sermon ...' (see also Add. 80 ), 'Orationes et Scripta Joannis Overall', 'Praelectio D. D. Overalli' (see also Gg.1.29 ), and copies of letters exchanged between Overall, John Cosin, and Hugo Grotius, 1613-21. Collection also includes a biography of Robert Sanderson, bishop of Lincoln, tanscribed from Bodleian MS Wood F.8; a copy of Sanderson's 'Opinion and Practice of the Liturgy'; copy of Zachary Catlin's 'Life of Doctor [Richard] Sibbs' (wrongly transcribed 'Gibbs'), published by J. E. B. Mayor in C. A. S. Communications, 1, p. 255. Knight occasionally used the backs of letters to compile these notes. The collection includes in this way letters from John Symonds, John Thorold, and John Sprint. There is also a note of the presentation of John Novell BD to the rectory of Northwold, 14 Sep. 1641.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

After Knight's death in 1746, the MS. descended to John Percy Baumgartner of Milton, Cambs., who presented it to the Library in 1861.
