'Arithmetic and algebra' (Cambridge: printed by and for J. Hall. 1835), with manuscript additions and annotations
Scope and Contents
This volume is a printed publication containing a compendium of University of Cambridge Mathematical Tripos examination papers 1829-1835 in arithmetic and algebra. It also contains over 100 pages of manuscript notes and hand-drawn diagrams by the unidentified owner of the volume dating from the late 1840s, bound together with the printed compilation, as well as annotations throughout the volume. Notes indicate the owner and author of the manuscript notes was probably a member of St John's College Cambridge and the initials Q. E. J. appear on the final pastedown of the volume. The volume also contains mathematical puzzles including a problem relating to magic squares ‘from G. J. Philadelphia, Sept. 24. 1847’, and ‘romantic riddle’ on p. 84. There is a lion’s head bookplate to front pastedown.
