Scope and Contents

Also includes notes relating mainly to the history of the Church in England. The notes are mainly in Latin, but there are many in English in the later part of the book. Inside the front cover are the initials 'T.C.', perhaps those of the compiler. A number of the leaves have been removed. (Fo. 2) 'Octob. 1710'; (fo. 155r) statistics of English Catholic clergy and laity put to death in each reign from Elizabeth I to Charles I; (fo. 207) notes headed 'Dr. Hawardin Contr: Sacr: Poeniten:'; (fo. 215v) further extracts from the same author upon other sacraments; (fo. 224) copy of a letter from E. Hawarden to Grimaldi, 14 March 1711; (fo. 226) copy of questions put at a visitation of Douai College by Decker and Smets, October 1711 (see Edwin Burton, Life and times of Bishop Challoner (1909), I , pp. 31-33); (fo. 227) note by the compiler of the manuscript making it clear he was present at the Douai visitation. From the other end of the volume are litanies and prayers in Latin and English. Those on fos 236v-231v are in a second hand, and are dated 1699. The rest, on fos 231r-228v, and ending with extracts from St Bernard's sermons, are in the volume's main hand.
