Scope and Contents

216 x 144 mm. The photograph is a group portrait of the members of the Ceylon War Council. The only figures identified are the Governor of Ceylon, Sir Andrew Caldecott (fourth from the left in the front row) and Brigadier Sir Patrick Alexander Bruce McKerron of the Malayan Civil Service. McKerron was seconded as Political Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief, Ceylon during the Second World War.

The National Archives in Colombo, Sir Lanka, holds another copy of this image. The caption is given as follows: 'Ceylon's War Council with Admiral Sir Geoffrey Layton, Commander-in-Chief, as centre figure. In the picture are (left to right): - Seated: Sir Baron Jayatilaka (Minister of Home Affairs and Leader of the State Council), Mr J.H. Nihill (Legal Secretary), Mr R.H. Drayton (Chief Secretary), H.E. Sir Andrews Caldecott (Governor), Admiral Layton, Lt.-Gen. Sir Henry Pownall (General Officer Commanding Troops, Ceylon), Air Vice-Marshall J.H. D'Albiac (Air Office Commanding, Ceylon), Rear-Admiral A.D. Read (Flag Officer, Ceylon), Major-General I.S.O. Playfair. Standing: Mr D.S. Senanayake (Minister of Agriculture and Lands), Colonel J. L. Koteiwala (Minister of Communications and Works), Mr C.W.W. Kannangara (Minister of Education), Mr S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike (Minister of Local Administration), Mr Geo.
