Scope and Contents

Originally formed part II of a law commonplace book, with entries O-W in 'law French' written in 2 cols (mostly recto), and an index on fos ii-iii. A later owner has used blank leaves and spaces to insert the following copies and notes: (fos 9-40v) Readings of [Sir] Charles Calthorpe, Trin. Term 1573 - Easter Term 1575, English, afterwards published as The relation between the lord of a manor and the coppy-holder his tenant, London, 1635 (repr. 1917, Manorial Soc. publ. no. 10). The present copy, perhaps contemporary with original readings, includes matter omitted from printed versions; (fos 41-2) notes on copyhold cases, in French; (fos 54-58v) reading of -- Gardiner on inheritance, Mich. Term 1575; (from back of book, fo. 188v) notes on disseisors, in French; (fo. 187v) verses titled 'Hector upon the distruccion of Troye', 12 ll., in English; (fo. 183v) notes on good government, in English; (fos 182v-178v) preface to William Fleetwood, Office of a Justice of the Peace, first published 1658. Many blanks. Bookplate of Joseph Tasker, Middleton Hall, Essex (early 19th cent.) Purchased of Hereward T. Wake, bookseller, Fritchley near Derby, 26 Jan. 1894.
