John Smyth: Notebook

 Fonds
Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Add.2640

Scope and Contents

Compiled while an undergraduate of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Includes (fos 19-28) notes on moral philosophy and (fos 33-108) a digest of the Cartesian system entitled 'Physica Incipientium sive Principia Cartesiana Tyronum Captibus Accommodata'. There are other copies at MSS Dd.6.46, Dd.12.33 and Add.3307. The first of these has the additional title 'Contracta Renati Des Cartesii Feltoneana', which seems to imply the authorship of one Felton, possibly John Felton (d. 1667), Fellow of Caius and usher of the Perse School. Dd.6.46 and Add.3307 both belonged, like the present copy, to Cambridge undergraduates at the dates of copying, respectively 1688 and 1683. Dd.12.33 is roughly contemporary.
