Scope and Contents
57pp., mostly manuscript rough draft in pencil covering Cantrell's time in Ceylon [Sri Lanka] as a child and then in Malaya [Malaysia] and Samoa as a planter between 1908 and 1914. The section on Malaya includes transcribed typescript notes prepared by Hugh Bryson. Together with correspondence between the donor, the RCS Librarian and Hugh Bryson.

Biographical / Historical
Ernest Graeme Cantrell (1886-1959), known as Graeme, was born in Ceylon in 1886, where his father William Cantrell was serving on the Ceylon Railway. The family returned to England aged six. In 1908, Graeme Cantrell travelled to the Federated Malay States where his brother was living and begun work as an assistant on Linsum Estate, owned by the Anglo-Malay Rubber Company. He returned to England on sick leave in 1910 and took up an appointment in Western Samoa, then a German colony, to teach rubber tapping and curing on the Aleisa Estate in Upolo. Cantrell left Samoa in April 1914. During the First World War, he served in the Malay States Volunteer Rifles and returned to Ceylon [Sri Lanka] after the war to manage a rubber estate. He emigrated to Canada following his marriage and became a fruit farmer on Vancouver Island.
