Biographical / Historical
Semei Kakungulu (1869-1928) was a Ugandan military and religious leader, chosen to be President of the Lukiiko [Parliament] of Busoga. The colonial administration did not give him the official title of ‘King’ and the area under his jurisdiction was restricted to a 20 square mile area around Mbale. Kakungulu’s relationship with the British broke down over a series of disputes, culminating in the compulsory purchase of land for Makerere College, Kampala, which he opposed. He died of pneumonia.
