The introduction is dated, 'Sunday Oct 24th 1841', with the place given as 'Library Otterden', but the author is unidentified. The notes comprise of shortened versions of eight articles published in the 'Saturday Magazine', nos 172-183, between March and May 1835, signed 'J.H.C.', possibly Rev. James Cordiner (d. 1836). There is also reference in the volume to material 'Abridged from Cordiner's History of Ceylon'. Other material is credited to the 'Oriental Annual', the 'Asiatic Journal' and other sources. The content covers history, inhabitants, religion, natural history, fauna (elephants and reptiles), fauna, minerals, trial by jury and the pearl fishery of Ceylon. There is a list of 17 illustrations at the front of the volume; only 16 ink and pencil illustrations are present.
