Susan Palmer’s collection of travel diaries
Content Description
Comprises six travel diaries and a small collection of photographs. The provenance of the collection is unknown. The diaries were in the estate of the late Dr Susan Palmer (died 2022). There is no obvious connection to the Palmer family, and the diaries do not appear to relate to each:
- item 1 in this collection is a private journal dating from the mid-19th century;
- items 2 and 3 are diaries of travels to Europe by an unidentified married couple;
- items 4 to 7 were assembled by J.W. Thompson of Oak Bank, Burnley, and document travels to South Asia before the First World War.

Biographical / Historical
Susan Palmer (1921-2022), known as Sue, was the youngest daughter of Leonard Shaftesbury Palmer (1888-1958) and Mabel Georgina Mowbray. During the Second World War, the Palmer family lived for a time in the Channel Islands (Captain Palmer served in the Intelligence Corps) and in Surrey. Susan trained as a doctor, completing much of her training at Hammersmith Hospital. She worked in Devon and Norwich, before moving to Dereham as a GP in 1954. She retired in 1981 and became engaged in a number of social causes including the Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOW) association, Friends of the Norfolk Dialect and the Dereham Disabled Club. She was unmarried.
