Scope and Contents

Comprises prize-winning essays received from the Imperial (later Commonwealth) Studies Committee. This series contains prize-winning essays for the following years: 1930-2, 1935, 1938-9, 1948-53, 1957-64 and 1966-73. Comprises essays, drafts and revisions, as well as published work. A full list of authors and titles can be found in Donald H. Simpson (ed.), 'The Manuscript Catalogue of the Library of the Royal Commonwealth Society' (1975), pp. 22-24. Biographical / Historical

A prize fund was established in 1930 by Mrs Frewen Lord in memory of her late husband, Walter Frewen Lord (1861-1927), professor of Modern History at Durham University and author of 'England and France in the Mediterranean 1660-1830' and other studies on colonial history. It was awarded on an annual basis by the Royal Commonwealth Society for scholarly work on some aspect of British Empire or Commonwealth History, restricted to scholars under the age of 35 years looking to publish their first book.
