Scope and Contents
Album of sketches and letters (mostly fragmentary) by Sir Philip Burne-Jones, titled on the front board 'Phil B.J's scraps'. Recipients of the letters and sketches include 'Grahame', 'Nelly' and 'Felicia', and some are written or drawn on headed notepaper with addresses in Egerton Terrace, London; Dovre Steet, London; Edenbridge, Kent; Rottingdean, Sussex; and Ostende. 49 sheets or fragments are pasted into the album, and there is one loose sheet. Titles or captions supplied by Burne-Jones include: 'Rêves du temps passé'; '"Duchess of Sutherland at home" guests "thinking imperially"'; 'Who said £5?'; 'Some of the suffragists on Saturday'; and 'His father's son'. Other captions include 'The fashionable hat'; 'Illustration to Harry Graham's comic poem: telling of the well-bred gent. who remained standing with his hat off till his lady friend sank - for last time'; and 'Hugo, Earl of Wemyss and March' [Hugo Richard Charteris (1857-1937), ninth earl of Wemyss and seventh earl of March]. Untitled subjects of illustrations include various figures in fashionable, formal or hunting attire, singly and in groups, sometimes at dinner; a bagpiper; a baby show (possibly incorporating a self-portrait of Burne-Jones); a Frenchman in bathing costume on a beach with bathing huts; an artist pinting at an easel (possibly incorporating a self-portrait of Burne-Jones); a man observing a (drowned?) female figure; scenes outside a theatre; figures possibly intended to be Egyptian, one with pyramids.
