Scope and Contents

Comprises 12 scrapbooks of newscuttings relating to Allardyce's career and the colonies he worked in, including photographs, programmes and ephemeral material. Some content relates to affairs in Aberdeen, where Allardyce had been educated. The scrapbooks relate to the following:
1-3 Fiji: 1882-4, 1895-1902, 1902-3;
4-6 Falkland Islands: 1908-9, 1909-13, 1914-18 (including the Battle of the Falkland Islands, 1914) and Tasmania: 1920-1;
7-8 Bahamas: 1915-17, 1918-19;
9 Tasmania: 1920-1;
10-12 Newfoundland: 1924-5, 1925-6, 1926-7
Together with an exercise book with a series of articles from 'Argus', Melbourne, 1874, on the Pacific labour trade.

Biographical / Historical

Sir William Lamond Allardyce (1861-1930) was a British civil servant in the Colonial Office. He began his service in Fiji in 1879, serving as the Receiver-General and Colonial Secretary. He went on to serve as the Governor of the Falkland Islands (1904-1914), the Bahamas (1914-1920), Tasmania (1920-1922) and Newfoundland (1922-1928). He died in Wokingham, Berkshire, in 1930.
