General

Some of the volumes have a hybrid character, combining dated diary entries with notes of a general character. The term 'daybook' (which was apparently preferred to 'diary' by Lister) has been applied where the predominant nature of the volume's entries is such as to comprise a sequential and contemporaneous account of Lister's life. The term 'notebook' is used when the predominant nature of the entries is of a more general, miscellaneous or retrospective nature.
