Scope and Contents
Under the will of Richard Greaves Townley esq of Fulbourn, Cambridgeshire, who died in 1823, certain of his lands were bequeathed to the Revd William Gale Townley, rector of Upwell, Norfolk, and to Robert Gregge Hopwood esq of Hopwood, Lancashire (2nd parties) in trust to raise sums sufficient to discharge all the testator's debts and legacies, any remainder to be held in trust for Townley's eldest son, Richard Greaves Townley (jnr) of Fulbourn, Cambridgeshire (1st party). All bequests and debts have now been paid, with the exception of #16,000 to be raised for the portions of Townley's younger children, the Revd Charles Townley, and Sarah Townley, both of Hildersham, Cambridgeshire (3rd parties). In consideration of #120, and with the consent of 2nd and 3rd parties, Richard Greaves Townley (jnr) now releases 3+ acres in Fulbourn, part of the lands so bequeathed, to John Hancock of Fulbourn, farmer (4th party). Edward Randall of Cambridge, gent (5th party), is named as Hancock's trustee to prevent mesne encumbrances. Lease: Doc 3763. Five-part indenture of 2 membranes, signed and sealed by the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd parties, witnessed by William Acton, Mary Gregge Hopwood, James Topham, Charles and John Mitford of Pits Hill, Petworth, gents, Charles Wodehouse, and Daniel Gurney; duty stamps. Endorsed with receipt for consideration money, signed by Richard Greaves Townley and witnessed by Charles Mitford. Parchment provided by Andrew Northcroft of Chancery Lane.
