Scope and Contents
Correspondence and memoranda concerning wages, apprenticeships, promotions and the retirement of industrial and non-industrial staff, as well as the applications of watch-makers, repairers and chronometer department staff. The papers include a reference from the Lee Estate Office testifying to D. Weston's reliability with regard to the payment of his rent; correspondence on the recruitment of a Senior Assistant and a Senior Principal Scientific Officer; a report on the Royal Danish Hydrographer's Office; correspondence between the Royal Observatory and the National Physical Laboratory regarding approval for punch-card computing; correspondence on the gift of the 98-inch disk by the Michigan Observatory for use in the Isaac Newton Telescope; correspondence regarding the bomb damage sustained by the Royal Observatory up to October 1940; correspondence on the total solar eclipse in South Africa, 1 October 1940; correspondence concerning the establishment of P.S. Laurie; correspondence regarding the appointment of R. Atkinson as Chief Assistant; and correspondence on the resignation of R. Woolley as Chief Assistant.
