'Buck's book', 1797 - 1850

Scope and Contents

This is a transcript, made in 1797 and mid-nineteenth century, of 'Buck's manuscript' in Queens' College, compiled by John Buck, Esquire Bedell in 1665, with additions by John Peck, Esquire Bedell in 1669. The transcript is in part by Joseph Romilly, Registrary 1832-62. The entries relate to academic customs, proceedings and ceremonies.

pp.1-57 Calendar of proceedings during the academic year 29 September – 10 June;

p.45 order of proceedings in vesperiis comitiorum;

p. 58 customs and academic ceremonies, 1665: begins with creations on royal mandate, note there are no supplicats for King’s College fellows;

p.67 the combination for courses of sermons and for opponencies in the Schools;

p.72 proceedings of 1638 when there was a disputed Grace for the election of delegates;

p. 74 proceedings at the funeral of a Vice-Chancellor or doctor (verses on hearse, oration); Dr Whitaker’s funeral, 8 Dec. 1595 (Regius Professor); Dr Soame, Vice-Chancellor, June 1608; followed by narratives of other funerals;

p.89 letters of Charles I, the Duke of Buckingham, etc., to the Vice-Chancellor and the Senate concerning Buckingham’s installation as Chancellor, 1626;

p.97 notes on elections, 1627-60; royal visits, proclamation of Charles II in 1660;

p.166 list of other matters in Buck’s Book;

At back, lists of preachers and their substitutes, 1775-97.

It has an index compiled in the mid-nineteenth century by Joseph Romilly, Registrary 1832-62.
