Scope and Contents

Correspondence relating to sunspots and prominences, 1882-1884. There are two letters from Christie to 'Nature' concerning the magnetic storm of 2 October 1882 and the great sunspot of November 1882 respectively, and a letter to 'Nature' from W. Huggins regarding the solar corona. The papers also include undated internal notes on sunspot dimensions.

Correspondence with E.L. Trouvelot, Meudon, 1891, concerning the solar outburst of 17 June 1891.

Correspondence relating to the great sunspot of February 1892; general correspondence with individuals; a cutting from the 'Globe', 18 February 1892, containing an interview with the Astronomer Royal, with subsequent correspondence; and a request from the 'Pall Mall Budget' for a photograph of a sunspot, with a cutting including the resulting article and photograph. The papers date from 1892.

Miscellaneous correspondence with various individuals concerning sunspots, 1891-1892, including the size of sunspots, the origins of sunspots and other solar phenomena, and the relation between solar phenomena and the weather, including a small booklet by T.S.H. Sheerman: 'The Connection between Solar Disturbances and Terrestrial Magnetic Disturbances'.
