Scope and Contents

Correspondence with the Director of Works and London County Council concerning the new overhead tramway from Woolwich to Eltham, 1901-1910, including:

1. Correspondence on measures to the taken to protect the magnetic instruments of the Royal Observatory.

2. Black and white photograph of a house in 'Spencer Gardens, Eltham' sent with a letter by S.T. Stafford to the Astronomer Royal asking that he refuse permission for the new line to go into operation because it would disturb a peaceful area.

3. Article from 'The Times Engineering Supplement', 14 April 1909: 'The Surface Contact Tramway in London'.

Memorandum by the Astronomer Royal 'On the Effects of Disturbances from Electric Railways on the Magnetic Work carried on at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich', 6 May 1907, 23 confidential copies.

Undated list of proposed railways during the period 1840-1888 which would approach or run close to the Royal Observatory.
