Scope and Contents

This class contains three sub-series: 1. star measures and students' work, relating to Pagel's and his students' scientific work; 2. papers related to Pagel's role as Scientific Officer at the RGO, including both papers he received as a member of staff and his own papers; 3. Pagel's undergraduate and (in one case) school notebooks.


The student work comprises numerous pieces of work carried out by students on stars and Y1P measures and determinations. These works although attributed to students are not signed, nor do they contain students’ names.


The subjects of the second sub-series include: correspondence with the Science Research Council, the Appleton Laboratory, the University of California, Tel Aviv University among others; management meeting minutes etc.; forward looks and estimates; lunar laser ranging; installation of the unit spectrograph; notes on the archives by P.S. Laurie; the Northern Hemisphere Observatory (NHO) project team; review panels; structuring of duties of cleaners, messengers and custodians etc.; library and publications; attendance register and flexi-time; astrophysical research at the RGO; job specifications; instrument projects; discussion of the Mauna Kea site on Hawaii. A substantial part of the collection consists of applications for grants or for observing time where Pagel acted as a reviewer.
