Scope and Contents

Comprises three photographs, mounted on card : Emma Darwin, c. 1890, in the drawing room at Down House, 370mm x 520mm; Henrietta Emma Litchfield in the drawing room at 31 Kensington Square, London, c.1900, 450mm x 350mm; the drawing room at 31 Kensington Square, London, c. 1900-1909, 450mm x 350mm. Also comprises a reproduction of the drawing of Charles Darwin found in the Botany School, Cambridge, by Professor Seward and Lady Barlow in 1929, possibly a preliminary sketch for the George Richmond watercolour at Newnham Grange, 285mm x 350mm. Also comprises the original of the above reproduction, a pencil sketch portrait of Charles Darwin, presumably a preliminary sketch for the George Richmond watercolour portrait of 1840.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Items 1 to 3 were transferred to Cambridge University Library in August 2007 by Charlotte Arnold, Cambridge Book and Print Gallery. Item 4 was previously displayed in Darwin Project Office and was formerly transferred to the Darwin Archive in Nov. 2007. Item 5 had been found in the Botany School, Cambridge, by Professor Seward and Lady Barlow in 1929 and was re-discovered at the house of Lady Barlow on 6 August 1987 by P. Gautrey.
