Biographical / Historical
The Language Centre grew out of the Language Laboratories installed in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages (MML) in the 1960s. It was established as a free-standing academic service in 1990 with three main functions: support for the University's language teaching faculties (MML, Oriental Studies and English), development of a programme of studies for non-linguists, and participation in research and development projects to enhance access to language learning via technology. It was housed in split accommodation on the Sidgwick Site.
In 2020 the Language Centre is an institution within the School of Arts and Humanities, located at Downing Place. Its mission is to 'increase multilingualism amongst students and staff of the University; promoting, encouraging and supporting the learning of languages for personal, academic and professional purposes'.
