The 'Cambridge Quarterly' was founded in 1965 (first issue: Winter 1965-6) with R. D. Gooder, H. A. Mason, J. M. Newton, W. W. Robson, Morris Shapira and G. R. Strickland as editors. Originally published by the editors, publication was for a period taken over by Oxford University Press. It has the ISSN 0008-199X. Volume 25 number 4 (December 1996) was titled on the front cover 'F. R. Leavis Special Issue: Reminiscences and Revaluations'. The editors were D. C. Gervais, R. D. Gooder, A. P. Newton, F. M. Rosslyn and G. C. Ward. The issue was occasioned by the publication of Ian MacKillop, 'F. R. Leavis: A Life in Criticism' (London: Allen Lane, 1995, ISBN 0-713-99062-7), and was conceived as a 'Symposium, partly on Leavis, and partly on the degree to which a biography can represent the truth about its subject' (303-4). Submissions were solicited from 'a large number of people who had known Leavis' (303), and the contributors were Michael Bell, Boris Ford, David Gervais, Andor Gomme, R. D. Gooder, Patrick Harrison, David Holbrook, John Holloway, Tony Inglis, L. C. Knights, Eve Mason, David Matthews, M. B. Mencher, Howard Mills, H. L. B. Moody, John Newton, Raymond O'Malley, Cecil Parkinson, Roger Poole, Felicity Rosslyn, Leo Salingar, William Shearman, Geoffrey Strickland, Geoff Ward, John Wiltshire, John Worthen, Brian Worthington and Michael Yudkin. The submissions were edited to enable all the material to be fitted into the number; there was some cutting of longer pieces and excision or abbreviation of overlapping material. The contributors were not able to quote from Leavis's work, and one submission was left unpublished for this reason. The accessible collection comprises the unedited manuscripts of all but two of the submissions for the number, together with two which were not printed. Access to a related file of correspondence is restricted until 1 October 2027.
