Scope and Contents
This class comprises papers largely relating to the Darwin family of Elston, Nottinghamshire, including notebooks, account books, recipe books, poetry and some material relating to Elston Hall. There is material relating to the following members of the family: Anne Darwin, nee Waring (1662-1722); Robert Darwin of Elston (1682-1754); William Alvey Darwin (1726-1783); Charles Waring Darwin (1855-1928); Robert Waring Darwin (1724-1816); Susanna Darwin (1729-1789); Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802); William Brown Darwin (1774-1841); Francis Rhodes Darwin (1825-1920); Robert Alvey Darwin (1826-47); Charlotte Maria Cooper Darwin (1827-1885); others unidentified. Robert Darwin of Elston was the great-grandfather of Charles Darwin.

Arrangement
The material has been arranged by family member, where this has been possible. A number of items are unidentified. This online catalogue, created in February 2021, is based on a preliminary listing spreadsheet created by Adam Perkins, Department of Manuscripts, CUL, in 2004. In addition to the 70 volumes and notebooks listed, Box 1 contains loose material in a folder (two letters from George Howard Darwin to William Darwin, 1897, and a receipt dated 20 June 1681) and Box 2 contains a fragment of a clasp from one of the volumes.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Deposited on loan by John Christopher Sacheverell Darwin (Christopher Darwin) in 1999, excepting MS DAR 267/70 which was presented to Cambridge University Library by Valerie King-Hele for Desmond King-Hele on 17 Aug. 2018. Later presented to Cambridge University Library by Christopher Darwin.
