Scope and Contents

This class comprises letters to and from Charles Darwin, largely with family members including Horace Darwin, William Erasmus Darwin, Henrietta Litchfield, Josiah Wedgwood, but also with Thomas Henry Farrer, George Henry Lewes, Hewett Cottrell Watson and others. The class includes scraps of notes cut up and used by Darwin's children for drawings, including fragments or draft pages from manuscripts of 'Origin of species' and 'Cirripedia', and a volume of 'Insectivorous Plants' signed by Charles Darwin.

DAR 185: 29, letter to Caroline Kennard, was purchased from Stuart Bennett bookseller, in November 1981. DAR 185: 46, letter to Charles Lyell, has been on indefinite loan from the National Trust, Leith Hill Place, Surrey, since March 1979. DAR 185: 68-69, letters to George Robert Waterhouse, were purchased at auction from Sotheby's in July 1978. DAR 185: 74, 'an account of fine dust', was purchased form Peter Gautrey in 1983. DAR 181: 81-90, letters to Thomas Rivers and Alfred Newton, were purchased at Sotheby's in July 1987. DAR 185: 91, letter to Charles Stokes, was purchased from Chaucer's Head in September 1987.
