This volume comprises Darwin's 'First pencil sketch of species theory' known as the 1842 pencil sketch or the 1842 essay, an 1844 draft version of the essay known as 'Part 1, Draft A' and a draft outline of species theory (see Gray Herbarium, Harvard University for fair copy sent to Asa Gray).
