Scope and Contents

Membrane 1r.: Gaol delivery and pleas before John Godbolt. Preamble: letters patent, writs of assize and gaol delivery commission.

  1. 1v. George Groome of Ely, labourer, is indicted that on 15 Jan. 1642 he stole, took and carried away a silver tankard worth five pounds belonging to Richard [?Hawsworth] and on 13 Jan. 1642 he burgled the dwelling house of Daniel Peachey at Ely between the hours of ten and twelve at night, and took and carried away two pairs of boots worth ten shillings and three pairs of shoes. Guilty; to be hanged.
  2. 2r. Henry Rastall of Wisbech, butcher, answered David Bell in an action of trespass on the case relating to a debt for the sum of 25 shillings, the residual payment for a bullock, 3 Dec. 1641 at Wisbech. The entry is incomplete.
  3. 2r. William Drury of Wisbech, gentleman, alias of March, answered [Borage] Martine, gentleman, and Elizabeth, his wife, executor of the will of Matthew Taylor, gentleman, in an action of debt of 38 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 31 Aug. 1639 at Wisbech. Drury fined; to pay costs and damages.
  4. 2v. Thomas Sunman of Witchford, husbandman, answered Nicholas Sayer in an action of trespass that on 1 July 1641 he assaulted Sayer at Witchford. The entry is incomplete.
  5. 2v. Thomas Buttey of Ely, earthen potter, is summoned to answer Talbot Pepys esquire in an action of debt of 16 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 11 May 1642 at Ely. The entry is incomplete.
  6. 2v. Andrew Beeseley of Ely, [?currier], is summoned to answer Talbot Pepys esquire in an action of debt of 10 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 11 May 1642 at Ely. The entry is incomplete.
  7. 3r. William Woodward of Girton, yeoman, is summoned to answer George Bond in an action of debt of 160 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 1 Oct. 1641 at Wilburton. The entry is incomplete.
  8. 3r. John Coventry of Wisbech, gentleman, and Geoffrey Huggell of Wisbech, labourer, answered John Strymshawe in an action that on 19 July 1642 they took ten bulls belonging to Strymshawe from a place called one hundred acres of pasture at Wisbech. The entry is incomplete.
  9. 3v. James Bell of Lincoln, joiner, is summoned to answer Barbara Burrowes in an action of debt of 14 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 22 Apr. 1638 at Wisbech. Bell fined; remanded in custody at Ely gaol.
  10. 3v. Joseph Colt of Littleport, husbandman, is summoned to answer Robert Longe in an action that on 18 May 1642 he took 16 sheep belonging to Longe from a field called the grey field or the fallow field in Littleport. There is discussion of the ownership of various pieces of land.
  11. 4r. John Foulser of Wisbech, cooper, is summoned to answer Margaret Fordham, widow, executor of the will of Francis Fordham, gentleman, in an action of debt of 60 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 24 June 1641 at Wisbech. Foulser fined; to pay costs and damages.
  12. 4r. Edward Amery of March, yeoman, answered Lancelot Manninge in an action of trespass on the case relating to a debt for the sum of 15 shillings and ten pence for a saddle with furniture and a whip, 28 June 1639 at Wisbech. The entry is incomplete.
