JENKINSON, Daisy, 1891-1910

 File
Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Add.10286/1/40

Scope and Contents

Eight letters sent from Daisy Jenkinson to Ida Darwin between December 1891 and November 1910. All but two of the letters were written in the early 1890s before Daisy married Francis Jenkinson and are primarily concerned with her feelings for him following the death of his first wife Marian in 1888. These letters also make reference to Francis entering a long period of engagement with 'Mildred' (whom, it is presumed, is a sister of Marian). Marriage between a man and his dead wife's sister was then forbidden until the passing of The Deceased Wife's Sister's Marriage Act in 1907. The remaining two letters from November 1910 are concerned with family news and in particular the birth of her niece Jessie.
